Hwanseon Cave is the biggest limestone cave in Korea, estimated to have been formed some 530million years ago. Inside the cave which keeps the mystery of old times to this day, diverse shapes of stalactites and stalagmites can be seen. Some of them dubbed 'Goblin's Club', 'King's Seat', 'Dream Palace', etc. Also, Hwanseon Cave is included in Cave Site of Daei-ri and it is marked as natural monument no.178.
According to the legend, once upon a time, a beautiful woman used to go for a swim at waterfall and pond near the candlestick rock in the Daei-ri village. However, when villagers found this place, rocks fell down with thunder and lightening near the Hwanseon Cave. Then, the waterfall and pond near the candlestick rock dried, and water flooded in Hwanseon Cave, now which is called as 'fairy waterfall.' After that, villagers believed that disappeared woman was a fairy and they performed ancestral rites and prayed for the village's peace.
